How to store toppers – Useful tips

It is very common to decorate our cakes with fondant or sugar figures and our customers like to keep these figures and memories from a special day.

Very often you ask me how to keep them. Today I bring you this post to give you some tips that always work for me. You can apply them to your own figures and even advise your clients.

How long does a topper last? Tips to keep them

Fondant figures can last for years, whether they are marzipan or gum paste, but you should know some care they need to last as long as possible.

  • For example, it is advisable not to expose them to the sun or light directly, as they lose colour and will spoil. It is best to do it in a cool, dry place. Sugar mordels, once they are firm, require more or less the same care as fondant.
  • We must take into account they are very fragile, so be careful. If they fall, they will shatter. Above all, it is important to know the thinner or smaller pieces, the easiest to break.
  • Another factor to consider is the fact that they do not generate bugs despite being sugar. So it is possible to keep them for years. In my case, I have kept some for more than 3 years. Although I have to say that they are not like the first day.
  • Over time, they are very likely to get dirty. To avoid this, it is best to keep them in a glass case, whenever possible. Another option is a box or wrap them with plastic wrap.

But why to do it? Can’t we clean them with a damp cloth? Personally, I do not recommend it, since the water spoils the figure generating stains and in many cases, we cannot remove the dust.

I hope these tips have been useful to you.
